New Study Reveals Prevalence of Workplace Inequality
Following International Women's Day in March and Equal
Pay Day in April, staffing firm Randstad USA published
a national survey evaluating gender inequality in the
workplace. While workplace equality regardless of gender,
sexual orientation, age, race, or religion is important to 78
percent of surveyed employees, results showed that more
than half of companies are failing to meet this expectation.
In fact, 56 percent of women and 52 percent of men believe
their workplace could do more to promote gender equality,
and only 47 percent of men and 45 percent of women view
their company as a diversity employer of choice.
Survey results also showed that women feel the brunt of
this workplace inequality. Only 31 percent feel they have
as many opportunities as men in their company, and 72
percent said that their employers do not offer leadership
programs geared toward women.
These results can have enormous implications for business,
as the vast majority of women (80 percent) reported that
they would switch employers if they felt another company
had greater gender equality. Other results include:
* Twenty-three percent of women disagree with the
statement: " I believe I am paid fairly compared to my
counterparts. "
* Forty percent of employees have discussed salary with
a coworker before, and nearly half of female workers
(49 percent) would leave a job if they learned a male
counterpart was making 25 percent more.
* Fifty-eight percent of women attribute a lack of
promotion to leadership roles as the top reason for gender
inequality in the workplace.
* Fifty-three percent of all employees believe unequal pay is
the top factor impacting gender inequality, while 49 percent
attribute outdated biases and stereotypes as the secondleading
factor.
What's the Outlook?
ManpowerGroup's Employment Outlook Survey for the second
quarter of 2018 are in, and the results are optimistic. The study
is a quarterly survey of 58,000 employers in 43 countries that
measures employers' hiring plans for the following quarter.
Results for the U.S. are positive, with one in five companies
planning to grow their companies in the quarter ahead.
As the economy continues to strengthen and the labor
market tightens, the demand for skilled talent continues to
grow. Survey results show that organizations are planning
to add staff across all 13 measured industry sectors in

the second quarter of 2018, with the highest rates of
hiring in leisure and hospitality; professional and business
services; and wholesale and retail trade. In contrast,
the weakest employment outlook is for workers in the
mining, government information, and non-durable goods
manufacturing industries.
In addition, results show that while employers in all four
U.S. regions report a positive hiring outlook for the second
quarter of 2018, the highest rates of hiring will be in
the Midwest. Hiring prospects year-over-year are slightly
stronger in the Midwest and the Northeast, with employers
in the South and the West reporting relatively stable hiring
intentions when compared with the second quarter of 2017.
Women in Tech
Entelo, a recruiting automation platform, has announced
the results of its Women in Tech Report, which aims to
quantify the gender disparity in the technology industry in
order to create a detailed picture of the current status of
women in tech. Results demonstrated major nationwide
gaps in the number of women in the tech industry
compared to men, and a 50 percent drop in the number of
women in executive roles compared to entry level roles.
Here are some other findings:
* Only 18 percent of tech roles in the U.S. are held by women.
* Women account for 19 percent of entry-level tech roles,
but only 16 percent of senior level and 10 percent of
executive level positions.
* Engineering features the lowest percentage of women at
17 percent, while product design features the highest at 36
percent.
* The gender disparity does not differ based on U.S. region.
Paychex Acquires Lessor Group
Paychex Inc., a leading provider of human capital
management solutions for small- to medium-sized
businesses, recently announced its acquisition of Lessor
Group, a Denmark-based provider of payroll and HCM
software solutions. With this acquisition, Paychex is
expanding its international reach beyond its existing
Germany operation and into parts of northern Europe.
The acquisition of Lessor's two service models-the Lessor
platform which delivers a SaaS and on-premise suite, and
Microsoft Dynamics, and a do-it-yourself, cloud-based
platform-also gives Paychex the capability to provide a
complete technology-enabled services platform.
Following the acquisition, Lessor Group's CEO Peter Colsted is
now managing director of Paychex's European operations.
