Boomers Working Longer
Baby boomers are some of the most experienced and
motivated members of the workforce, and according
to a new study from Korn Ferry Futurestep, many
executives don't believe they are ready to retire. In
fact, as a direct consequence of the recession, baby
boomers may be in the workplace for at least another
five years.
The survey found that:
* Eighty-one percent of executives surveyed now
believe that baby boomers will retire at least five
years later than they had planned prior to the
recession.
* Thirty-one percent believe they will retire 10 years
later or more.
* Forty-three percent of respondents say baby
boomers in their organization will retire at age 66 or
older.
Although this trend may prevent younger employees
from receiving promotions or otherwise advancing up
the career ladder, the survey also indicates that the
delay in retirement may be good for business. Many
of the executives surveyed (55 percent) say that baby
boomers are willing to work longer hours than other
generations; 31 percent felt baby boomers needed
less feedback than Millennials or Gen X employees;
and 50 percent consider 'experience and expertise'
as the main reason for bringing baby boomers into a
business.
Wellness Programs Working
saved their employers an average of 24.5 percent in
total healthcare costs-that's nearly $1,300 less per
person than those who didn't participate. Another
organization attributes $2.3 million saved over two
years to a Fitbit corporate wellness program that also
improved health outcomes of employees.
These findings illustrate that Fitbit corporate wellness
programs can give employers a considerable return
on their investment. Springbuk used three years of
medical claims, pharmacy, biometric and activity data
to analyze the effects of a corporate wellness program
using the Fitbit platform on the employees of a selfinsured
employer with over 20,000 employees. The
study established a baseline (before Fitbit) with the
first year of data, then analyzed the impact of the
Fitbit program over two years.
Other findings include:
* The total costs for engaged FitBit users dropped by
46 percent over a two-year period, compared to a 14
percent decrease among non-engaged individuals.
* Cost reduction is potentially highest with less active
individuals.
* The total cost for less active users decreased by 59
percent over a two-year period, compared to a 22
percent decrease for those who were more active.
Hours Up, Morale Down
According to Staples Business Advantage's annual
Workplace Index, productivity and time spent in the
office is up, but this may not be a positive trend for
workplace morale.
Seventy percent of U.S. office workers and managers
report working more than 40 hours a week, and most
(66 percent) consider the office the most productive
place to get work done. But for most employees,
those longer hours are an effort catch up on work
they couldn't finish during an eight-hour day, and
that workload is taking a toll. Consider the following
results from the Workplace Index:
* Sixty-four percent of respondents say their workplace
has contributed to stress.
A study by Springbuk, an employer-facing health
intelligence platform, recently revealed that
employees who opted into the Fitbit program
