Review Process
HR is finding value in leveraging recognition program
metrics for employee performance evaluations.

Traditional
performance
reviews have
earned a reputation
among the majority
of organizations for
underperforming.
In fact, research
from Saba
found that only
eight percent
of companies believe their performance management process is highly
effective in driving business value, with 58 percent reporting it's not an
effective use of time. Why is this?
" I think the biggest problem with performance management and
performance metrics of all kinds is they are imperfect, " says Peter Cappelli,
the George W. Taylor professor of management at The Wharton School
and director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources. " They only capture
one aspect of performance. We are not at the point where there is a simple
metric that will work for the benefit of the organization. "
Plus, traditional performance reviews are often viewed unfavorably by both
managers and employees. " Most organizations constantly have to deal with
the negative perceptions of conducting performance reviews, " explains
Roy Saunderson, MA, CRA, chief learning officer for Rideau Recognition
Solutions. " Managers are affected by poor employee support, inaccurate
ways of rating performance, and the whole scheduling and performance
review process. "
That's why more and more organizations are turning to the metrics from
their recognition programs to provide employees with performance
feedback to help with goal setting and growth opportunities.

Companies are adopting volunteer programs to attract
and retain younger workers.

Every day, people
become more
conscious of their
impact on the
world and how
they can shape it
in their personal
lives. Faced with
global economic,
political, and
social instability
and disruption, the millennial generation in particular is turning its attention
to social causes that benefit the greater good. Whether it's by supporting
altruistic brands like TOMS or contributing to non-profit fundraising
efforts on Facebook, it's clear that young people today want to be socially
responsible.
And this trend has immense implications for business. As both customers
and employees, many millennials prefer to support businesses that give
back to their communities and embrace corporate social responsibility.
Companies looking to attract and engage this generation of workers need
to adapt to these new priorities.
" It takes more than perks to attract, retain, and engage today's diverse,
socially-conscious workforce. Purpose, passion, and an ability to make an
impact are important to employees-especially millennials, who will make
up 50 percent of the global workforce in just two years, " says Vivian Farris,
vice president of people at Benevity.
According to Cone Communications' 2016 Employee Engagement Study,
79 percent of millennials consider a company's social and environmental
commitments when deciding where to work, compared to the U.S. average
of 58 percent. In addition, 88 percent of millennials feel their jobs are more
fulfilling when they are provided with opportunities to make a positive
social impact, compared to 74 percent of U.S. employees on average.
