Defining Recognition
Learn the ins and outs of employee recognition with this glossary of key industry
terminology.
Crowdsourced Performance Reviews
Performance evaluations that utilize informal peer-to-peer
recognition feedback data in conjunction with the traditional,
formal review process in order to obtain a wider and more
accurate picture of individual and company performance.
Employee Engagement
A measure of employee willingness to go above and beyond
the minimum required effort to achieve organizational goals.
While high employee engagement can be nurtured through
recognition and other initiatives, the choice to engage with
company culture is ultimately made by the employee alone.
Formal/Macro Recognition Program
A formalized organization-wide commitment to acknowledge
and reward employee behaviors that support the mission,
values, goals, culture, and initiatives of the company.
Recognition programs are most effective when they consist of
a wide variety of rewards, including informal recognition and
tangible awards, and are broadly communicated and driven
throughout all levels of an organization.
Informal/Micro/Social Recognition
Non-monetary, timely, informal recognition in which all
employees of an organization are encouraged to give each
other frequent positive feedback and appreciate the good
work of those around them. Informal recognition can range
from individual conversations to public announcements
of accomplishment and create a positive workplace where
employees are engaged and motivated to succeed.
Manager-to-Employee Recognition
A manager's acknowledgment and communication of an
employee's high performance or contribution.
Non-Monetary Rewards
Methods of employee recognition that go beyond monetary
rewards to build employee connections, meaning, and a
stronger company brand and culture. Examples include greater
flexibility, more independence, access to learning opportunities,
personalized " thank you " notes, and emails to senior staff
members, among others.
Peer-to-Peer Recognition
Genuine and authentic recognition that occurs between
employees with no manager influence. This type of recognition
can result in improved collaboration, increased engagement,
reduced turnover, and enhanced workplace satisfaction.

interacting with their teams. These platforms can also be used
to amplify and broadcast recognition within the company.
Strategic Recognition
The practice of aligning recognition practices with broader
organizational goals in order to shape employee behavior in
ways that promote core company values and strategic priorities.
In this approach, recognition becomes a powerful management
practice that extends beyond the HR silo into all levels of an
organization.
Tangible Rewards
Items employees receive to commemorate a recognition
moment. These are commonly chosen directly by the employee
through a points-based system or catalog rather than being preselected
by the organization.
Wellness Awards
Awards granted to reward healthy behaviors and promote
an organizational culture of wellness. By promoting wellness,
employers can reduce healthcare costs, increase productivity,
and improve overall employee well-being.
Years of Service Awards
Service awards that reward employees' commitment to a
company by commemorating work anniversaries and significant
milestones.
