Glossary
A Solid Foundation
Understanding terminology is essential for professionals that work in tandem with the
relocation industry.
Agent
An independent moving company that is authorized to
act on behalf of the carrier when managing booking,
origin, hauling, and/or destination services.
Allowance Plan
A relocation policy approach that sets a maximum
amount that employees can spend on their move. If
the employee does not reach the maximum amount
in allowance, they generally do not get to keep the
remainder of the money. While this approach gives
employees flexibility, it comes with one risk: transferees
who overspend typically have to cover the remainder of
the costs themselves.
Booking Agent
The carrier employee responsible for accepting and
registering a customer's move. The booking agent may
also double as the origin or destination agent.
Bill of Lading
A receipt for the transportation of belongings by the
carrier. A customer's signature releases all goods to the
carrier at the agreed-upon price.
Carrier
The professional moving company that transports the
relocating employee's belongings to their new residence.
Core Flex Plan
A relocation policy approach that allows employees
to choose among a number of flexible benefits to
accompany a set of core benefits granted to every
transferee. Flex benefits can include things like a
home-finding trip, language training, spousal support,
mortgage assistance, short-term housing, and more. This
approach allows employees to customize their move
based on their own personal circumstances.
Cross-cultural Training
Training programs that help transferees become familiar

with their destination culture and develop realistic
expectations of the experience. These training programs
typically include information about cultural norms,
internal biases, communication styles, daily life in the
host country, and the goals of the move itself. They may
also include language training.
Destination Agent
The carrier employee responsible for providing assistance
and information regarding the shipment of goods once
they arrive at their destination.
Expatriate
A person who lives outside of their native country.
Expense Reimbursement
A type of relocation policy that reimburses transferees
for costs incurred throughout the relocation process. This
is generally tracked through either an online portal or a
receipt submission process.
H-1B Visa
A type of U.S. work visa that that allows organizations
to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty
occupations, such as engineering, medicine, mathematics,
architecture, or technology. While these visas are similar
to L-1 visas, the quota of H-1B visas is very limited
and they are only valid for the specific employer or
corporation that petitioned the visa.
Home-finding Trip
An opportunity for transferees to visit their destination
city and look for housing. Home-finding trips are strongly
recommended as they allow transferees to get a feel
for the city and neighborhood, helping the acclimation
process upon their arrival.
L-1 Visa
A type of U.S. work visa that allows multinational
organizations to transfer their employees from foreign
branches into the U.S. This visa is limited to employees
