Lump Sum
A sum of money given to a transferee to supplement their
relocation. Some companies choose to use a lump sum
to facilitate the entire relocation, while others offer it in
combination with a more defined policy such as a core flex
plan. While organizations can take various approaches to
administering and distributing lump sums, it is important
to note that they are entirely taxable.
Moving Consultant
The employee a carrier provides as a transferee's single
point of contact. From origin to destination, the moving
consultant will contact movers, advise employees, and
contract any additional services.
Origin Agent
The carrier employee responsible for readying the
shipment for movement and providing information at
origin.
Relocation Package
An overview of the terms of a relocation offer. The
relocation package should outline what the transferee
is receiving in terms of benefits, the start date, any
financial obligations, and points of contact throughout the
relocation process. A written contract should be drafted
that states who is responsible for what and sets the limits
of the employer's relocation policy.
Repatriation
A transferee's return to their home country. Many
relocation providers offer repatriation services to smooth
the transition of reintegration.
Repayment Agreement
An agreement that a transferee signs which states that
they will be responsible for paying back their lump sum/
benefits if they do not fulfill their contractual obligation to
stay in a destination country for the agreed-upon period
of time.
Short-term Housing
Fully furnished housing typically utilized by either full-time
transferees with a gap in between the sale of their home
and their new move-in-date, or temporary employees that
need a place to live throughout their term of employment
with a company.
Site Visit
A benefit that allows relocating employees and their
spouses to travel to the new destination and learn more
about the community, office, schools, and housing. A
minimum of two days is typical for these trips.
Spousal Assistance
A relocation benefit intended to support transferees'
families and help them manage the transition to the new
location. Programs can include job-finding services or
placement assistance, career coaching, and coaching on
country-specific customs.
Storage in Transit (SIT)
A carrier's temporary storage of a transferee's household
goods, pending transportation at a later date. SIT service
may not exceed a total of 180 calendar days. After that
period, the shipment falls under the ruling of local
warehouse organizers.
Survey
An initial estimate of moving charges conducted by an
agent. Is is usually conducted at the site of origin through
visual and inventory checks.
Temporary Living Allowance
A relocation benefit that covers the transferee's costs
of living in the interval of time between leaving their
home and finding permanent accommodation in the new
location.
Temporary Relocation
Relocation for a short-term assignment. Employers are
increasingly leveraging this strategy to engage and
develop employees, reduce costs, and increase productivity
around particular business initiatives.
