Hero Hau Thai-Tang

Thanks for a great article on Hau Thai-Tang [March]. I worked
with the '05 Mustang program as a supplier partner and at
that time we all knew he was destined for top management
- at Ford or anywhere in the auto industry! Then as head of
Ford Purchasing he demonstrated more of the diplomatic
management skills that could yet put him into the CEO seat in
Dearborn. Hau's an industry hero
to those who know him.

Thank you, SAE, for recognizing
Hau Thai-Tang in the March issue.
It is a very interesting and factual
article.

Hype-horsepower EVs

Enjoyed your April editorial.
Despite all the hype, we should be
glad to be witnessing the greatest
automotive landscape transformation in over 100 years.
You are correct that there will
be casualties. History is full of
manufacturers and brands that
did not survive. But that is what
makes it all so interesting. Like
March Madness, you know that
only a few will make it to the
Final Four, but it's still fun to
watch. The small start-up companies that demonstrated risk tolerance and innovation kept
the legacy automakers on their toes during the early part of
the 20th century.
Yes, the common theme to draw attention to EV startups right now is pickups, power and torque. But reading
the fleet magazine journals reveals that those companies'
business plans really are all about the commercial truck
market. It's easier to capture interest in a company by
talking about a high-powered pickup truck than, say, a
commercial delivery van.

Inmotive's innovative 2-speed

Your article in the February SAE magazine on the clever new
Inmotive 2-speed transmission was informative. My company
is currently investigating power transmission options for a
new product and this article enlightened us on two critical
issues. Thank you.

Still more on EV cabin heat

I read the Reader Feedback section of the January/February
2021 issue with great interest.
The concerns expressed with
[EVs in] cold weather are very
real and must be considered.
However, similar concerns exist
for warm-weather driving. If the
outside temperature is high, as it
is often here in this part of
Pennsylvania in the summer -
and as it certainly is in areas in
the deep south and Arizona, etc.
- air conditioning is more of an
issue than cabin heat. All four of
our family vehicles are air conditioned. In hot weather, either an
EV would have to be driven with
all windows open and hot air
blowing or windows closed and
an onboard air conditioning unit
driven by the battery. Though I
don't have any " numbers, " I can
only imagine the effect running
an air conditioner on the vehicle's battery would have on its
range! AAA commented on this subject recently in an article
" Cold weather can cut electric car range over 40 percent. "
While it is common knowledge that running an air conditioner in an IC-engine auto also reduces mileage, the deleterious effect is nowhere near 40%. I think your readers would
also be very interested in the effect of hot weather on EV
range, too. Let's get the whole story out there.
