New Tools & Technologies
Interoperable self-driving stack
The Embark Universal Interface (EUI) is a set of standardized
self-driving components and the flexible interfaces necessary for
truck OEMs to integrate Embark's (San Francisco, Calif.) autonomous technology more easily and robustly into their vehicle
platforms. The EUI achieves its universality through a two-part
design. Part one consists of a standardized components package - sensors and compute system - that has been determined through thousands of
hours of design, testing, and analysis. Between these standardized components and the
truck is part two of the EUI design, a set of physical, electrical and software interfaces
that enable the standardized components package to connect to and communicate with
any OEM platform's steering, braking, throttle, telematics, power, chassis, and HVAC. At
the center of the interface package is the Embark Gateway, an automotive-grade ECU
that enables API communication between Embark's technology and any OEM platform.

Motion and I/O controller
ClearCore from Teknic (Rochester, N.Y.) is a multi-axis, motion
and industrial I/O controller offering OEMs a new way to save
space, money and wiring in their automated machinery.
ClearCore provides four axes of motion control, Ethernet, serial,
USB, and wireless expandability along with 13 configurable digital & analog I/O points. Hardware includes a 32-bit, floating
point ARM Cortex-M4 processor, 192k local RAM, 512k Flash, interrupt handler, and an
onboard SD Card interface for storage expansion. ClearCore provides up to four axes
of motion control for Teknic's ClearPath integrated servos, third party stepper drives,
or any brushless servo motor with a digital servo drive. Customers can extend I/O
compliment with 8-point I/O expansion modules (CCIO-8) for a total I/O compliment
of 73 I/O points. ClearCore is compatible with XBee modules for peer-to-peer wireless communications such as WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, DigiMesh, 802.15.4, and others.

Silicon photomultiplier array
ON Semiconductor's (Phoenix, Ariz.) RDM-Series silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array extends the LiDAR sensor capabilities to its
broad portfolio of intelligent sensing solutions. According to the
company, the ArrayRDM-0112A20-QFN is the first automotive-qualified SiPM product in the market, ready for the growing demands in
LiDAR applications for the automotive industry. The ArrayRDM0112A20-QFN is a monolithic 1×12 array of SiPM pixels based on the company's RDM
process, which enables high sensitivity to near-infrared (NIR) light to achieve 18.5% photon detection efficiency (PDE)* at 905 nm. The high internal gain of the SiPM allows sensitivity down to the single-photon level, a feature that in combination with the high PDE,
enables the detection of the faintest return signals. This results in the ability to range to
greater distances even with low reflective targets. *Max PDE at typical operating voltage
and 21°C (70°F). PDE increases to >25% at 905 nm at elevated temperature.

Accelerated vehicle
development software

VI-grade's (Darmstadt, Germany) VIWorldSim is a high-resolution graphic
environment for accelerated vehicle
development dedicated to the highend automotive market. The software
features a user-friendly and fully integrated graphic environment on VIgrade driving simulators with realistic
traffic and sensor behavior. The software not only brings traditional track
modeling to a higher level of realism
based on the Unreal high-performance
graphic engine, but also adds the features needed to test on CAV (connected and autonomous vehicles) sites,
urban environments and public roads
for ADAS and autonomous vehicle (AV)
testing. Features include traffic, pedestrians, lighting, weather, and sensors to
enable users to create and test scenarios for vehicle development programs
through an intuitive and easy-to-use
desktop editor. Vehicles, pedestrians
and animals are AI-driven actors who
follow normal routes or can be controlled through the definition of specific behaviors. A single engine provides
users with different types of environments, simulations and disciplines.
