New Tools & Technologies
HD signal on
low-cost cables
With high-definition (HD) video increasingly
important in vehicle safety
systems for object recognition functionality,
Renesas Electronics
Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) introduced
its new Automotive HD Link (AHL)
technology that enables automotive
manufacturers to deliver high-definition
video over low-cost cables and
connectors that currently support standard-definition
video. The new
RAA279971 AHL encoder and
RAA279972 decoder use a modulated
analog signal to transmit the video,
enabling transmission rates 10 times
less than required to transmit HD signals
digitally. The lower transmission
rate means that traditional twisted pair
cables and standard connectors can be
used, as can existing analog video cables
and connectors. Renesas said AHL
also can be paired with other Renesas
advanced driver-assistance system
(ADAS) products and components to
cost-effectively implement numerous
safety features in virtually any vehicle.

Scanning micro-lidar
LightWare LiDAR (Austin, TX) is shipping the SF45 scanning
micro-lidar module, which it claims is the smallest
and lightest scanning lidar on the market, adding that the
unit weighs just 59 g " but delivers the performance of
much larger sensors. " The SF45 provides accurate position,
distance and proximity sensing for drones and UGVs. Able to detect obstacles in
bright sunlight at 50 meters, the SF45 delivers a clear understanding of the machine's
environment to either the onboard autopilot or a remote operator. LightWare LiDAR
manufactures a family of micro-lidar sensors such as the tiny SF000/B at a weight of
just 8 g. Data from these sensors allow drones a safe take-off and precision landing, to
hold position near an object being inspected or closely follow terrain without flying into
trees, the company said.

Vehicle dynamics software
Mechanical Simulation Corporation (Ann Arbor,
Mich.) has released the 2021.1 versions of the vehicle
simulation tools CarSim, TruckSim and BikeSim. A
new feature in 2021.1 allows the user to build a database
covering examples showing only features of
interest. The Database Builder has six different data
groups to choose from: Minimal, Basic ADAS, Basic
Vehicle Dynamics, Standard ADAS, Standard Vehicle Dynamics, and Full. This feature
enables users to quickly build databases with examples suited for either new or experienced
users, in fields of ADAS, vehicle dynamics, or both. The Database Builder also
allows databases to be built with a selection of additional examples that use optional,
specialized features, such as trailers, sensors, desktop driving simulator, real-time systems
and external tire models.

FPGA mezzanine card
Abaco Systems (Huntsville, Ala.) offers the FMC165
FPGA mezzanine card as part of its portfolio, offering
higher analog sampling rates, improved signal to
noise ratio (SNR), and enhanced multi-board synchronization
processes from earlier generations. The device
is useful in applications with direct RF down conversion
such as radar/sonar, software defined radio,
and ultra-wide-band satellite digital receivers for defense, electronic warfare, medical
equipment, aerospace and test instrumentation solutions. The FMC165 can be integrated
with any FMC/ FMC+ compatible carrier in an air-cooled configuration and in
either air-cooled or conduction-cooled environments with Abaco FPGA carrier cards.
This new card allows for flexible control of clock source through serial communication
buses and is equipped with power supply and temperature monitoring.
