THE CLEMSON FORMULA SAE TEAM WAS
FOUNDED IN 1998. It now consists of more than
50 members from various majors throughout the
university. While some work exclusively on
business or manufacturing, most take on their
own engineering projects, pushing themselves to
improve on the previous year's car. As we
completed our 2018 car, we started asking
ourselves how we could improve on our design
process to take our engineering and vehicle
performance to the next level.
Every year we have three team-wide
engineering goals that guide the overall design
direction of the car. Since 2018, one of them has
been focused on the modeling of vehicle
subsystems. This evolution was guided by the
overall vision that our then chief engineer,
Jonathan Vogel, had for the team: to develop a
more cohesive, well integrated vehicle concept.
The first goal in this trend was for our 2019 car,
where we worked to develop, validate, and use
theoretical models to drive our design decisions.
