At about this time, new
electronics were being
introduced into cars in a rather
random way. " The management
of the Research Labs felt that
there was a better way to
integrate this technology to
move forward, " Rohde explained.
" Project Trilby was created to
develop by-wire control
systems-a needed prerequisite
to the autonomous movement
today! " He was a manager in this
activity that brought systems
engineering into GM.
To augment this effort, GM
purchased Hughes Aircraft in
1985. This led to a new GM thrust
toward systems engineering, and
a Systems Engineering Center
was formed. Rohde became a
key manager in that
organization, moving it toward
virtual product design. " Again,
more math applied to car
design! " he exclaimed.
His final assignment at GM was
to lead an activity to increase
GM's corporate math capability.
He retired from GM in 2002. At
that time his son, Mitchell, had
started an engineering company
in Saline, Mich., called Quantum
Signal. Rohde joined Quantum
