Ireland was named the first SAE Contributor of the
Year in 2019 for his volunteer efforts in 2018, but he is
in the running for the award every year.
" My most fulfilling roles have been the 15 years I
served on the SAE Board of Directors as a member
and as Vice President of the Aero Sector, he said.
" Understanding the background workings of a major
not-for-profit in the service of its members and
society (501 (c)(3)) is amazing. As Finance
Committee Chair, and in general as a board member,
one has the feeling of really supporting the health
and growth of SAE. "
Ireland has served on the SAEA Aerospace Council
since 1998 and is a member of the AeroTech Strategic
Leadership Council. To name just a couple!
Robert Galyen has
unique definition of
" retired "
Waking up every day at about
7:00 or 8:00 a.m. and hitting the
hay late at night after conducting
business all day-including four
to six hours/week of volunteer
work on SAE's behalf-hardly
qualifies as " retirement. " But that
is indeed Robert Galyen's status
after having spent more than
seven years in China as CTO of
the world's largest battery
maker, CATL (Contemporary
Amperex Technologies Co.
Limited).
" I'm busier now than I've been
in a long time, " he told Update.
" The battery industry is moving
so rapidly. I have a lot of
meetings, and there's probably
not one that doesn't touch SAE
in some way, shape, or form. "
Galyen chairs the SAE Battery
Standards Steering Committee,
which he said now has 24 active
reporting committees
addressing various aspects of
batteries. " He expects to lead
the launch of another one or two
SAE battery standards
committees this year.
