pursued was measuring wheel power directly. SAE
J2908 defines a wheel power test but is adding a
rated power estimation method for comparisons to
conventional engines. We expect both SAE standards
document updates to be published later this year.
A common thread over my career centers on test
procedures for advanced vehicle technologies that
have potential to improve energy efficiency. At first
glance, test procedures may seem boring or
inconsequential. Consider, however, that every claim
made about a new technology can only come from a
test. What range? What efficiency? How powerful?
These critical questions are only answered with a test.
New technology can sometimes be different enough
that an entirely new test framework must be
developed. The new test must not inject bias resulting
in erroneous claims about the new technology.
As a researcher at Argonne, I have the liberty to
remain impartial, I do not represent regulatory
authorities or industry. My goal is to find the true
performance merits that help accelerate deployment
of the best technology. I cannot be an advocate that
promotes a technology beyond its true capabilities.
Imagine if a new test biases results optimistically.
Inaccurate claims based on the test can have terrible
consequences. There are several high-profile
examples of technology that did not live up to its
claims and " poisoned the well " for years. Conversely,
if a technology unjustly scores poorly, the result could
leave beneficial technology overlooked.
Many emerging technologies are now being
developed to improve vehicle transportation
efficiency (such as automation and connectivity), and
as before, we are enthusiastically prepared to help in
the transition from lab ideas to widespread adoption
with impartial evaluations. n
