just monitoring for engine protection) and its
calibration requirement and lifecycle (i.e. last
calibration date, sensitivity changes over time). This
data can be used at department level to make sure
sensor stocks are deployed efficiently for tasks, with
risk reduction and reduced downtime or loss of data.
Outlook
As the market requirements change the shape of ICE
applications, this drives the requirement for new,
novel, and innovative combustion systems - a prerequisite
of the development tasks supporting this
innovation is to gain high-quality measurement data
for validation and optimisation of virtual
environments. Therefore, the need for accurate
combustion and engine cycle measurement will
continue, and increases, with advancing powertrain
technology. A paradigm shift in this area will be when
combustion pressure analysis is enabled during run
time, in production vehicles. This will provide
significant in-service benefits with respect to the
ability to control combustion, cyclically, based on
measured feedback. Enabling a new level of
combustion control, engine optimisation and
efficiency to be achieved.
There are two factors that will drive this: reduction
of cost for sensors and measurement equipment that
can be deployed in production, and legislation forcing
further reduced emissions with realistic costs to
deploy emission control technology. The tipping point
is when reducing combustion emissions at source is
more cost effective than expensive aftertreatment.
We are not far from this point and, indeed, both may
be required ultimately.
In summary, combustion pressure measurement
and analysis workflows are providing essential data
