We're thrilled to unveil the
Wallace Battery Cell Innovation
Center this week. Located on the
campus of our Global Technical
Center in Warren, Mich., the
facility will be the nerve center of
battery cell development at GM.
It builds on the lithium-ion
development already taking
place in the chemical and
materials subsystems lab in our
R&D facilities in Warren along
with the battery validation work
happening at our Estes Battery
Systems Lab, which, at over
100,000 square-feet, is the
largest lab of its kind in North
America Currently under
construction, the Wallace Center
joins GM's network of battery
development facilities located on
its Global Technical Center
campus in Warren, Michigan,
including one of the largest
battery validation center in North
America, the Estes Battery
Systems Lab:
* The new Wallace Center can
develop lithium-metal, pure
silicon anode, and solid-state
batteries along with
production methods that can
quickly be deployed at battery
cell manufacturing plants.
* We'll have the only facility in
North America that can build

large-format, prototype battery cells for vehicles.
The Wallace Center will have the capability to build
cells as large as 1,000 mm, nearly twice the size of
our initial Ultium pouch cells.
* Part of our strategy is to use stacked anodes to
create viable lithium-metal batteries; we will have
the capability to stack anodes at our Ultium Cells
LLC joint ventures with LG Chem when those
facilities open in 2022 and 2023.
* And by locating battery development and
prototype assembly lines next to testing stations in
the same building, we can speed up our ability to
commercialize new technology.
The Wallace Center is named after Bill Wallace, a
battery engineering leader and visionary at General
Motors. Despite fighting cancer, Bill continued
working at General Motors and leading his team until
he passed in 2018. The Wallace Center is a fitting
