Language of Vehicle
Autonomy

Amid growing public misconceptions of what 'self-driving'
means, engineers stress the importance of standards and the
need for crystal-clear terminology.
Call them what you may - autonomous vehicles,
automated vehicles, self-driving vehicles - they are
coming. You can't buy one yet, and their capabilities will
arrive in stages. Such vehicles will ascend a ladder of automated
functionality over the next decade. And, as with
many new technologies, there is already much confusion
and misrepresentation about the terminologies (i.e.,
ADAS, AV) and gradations (Level 2, 3, etc.) of autonomy.
What's in a name? A lot, potentially, as lives will
be lost if consumers don't understand what the vehicle
they're driving or riding in can and cannot do to avoid
dangerous situations on the road.
This was brought into focus by an early-2022
New York Times article [https://www.nytimes.
com/2022/02/04/opinion/self-driving-car-escalade.
html] characterizing an SAE Level 2 system as " selfdriving, "
and the deserving backlash that followed from
enthusiast forums. SAE International and other organizations
have been working for years with industry
partners to bring clarity to this space. It's a challenging
task, with technology advancing so quickly there often
are no common terms to describe it.

Vehicles. This evolving document has helped define
the vocabulary around which the industry is rapidly
expanding.The most recent and already fourth revision

in April 2021 aims to harmonize terms globally with
ISO's 22736.
