LET'S TEACH TRAFFIC
SIGNALS A LESSON!
IT MAY NOT BE POPULAR - ESPECIALLY
WITHIN SAE INTERNATIONAL CIRCLES -
TO RAIN ON THE AUTOMATED
TRANSPORTATION FUTURE.
But I don't think I can be blamed for
casting doubt about the prospects of a
traffic-free 21st century in a society that is,
for the most part, still saddled with mid20th
century traffic-signal technology. Am I
the only one who notices this? I ask
because just about no one, it seems, is
doing anything about the problem of
sitting uselessly in your car for the red light
at a traffic signal when there is no other vehicle in sight.
It might be called ironic that so much money and brain are being

applied to development of automated vehicle technology when the
fancy cars have to operate on an antiquated infrastructure.
Sure, there are pockets of enlightenment here and there, with a
few smart signals capable of sensing traffic flow in a somewhat
sophisticated and " smart " way and then self-governing their own
operation to maximize traffic throughput.
I would just love if it we as a society would divert some
brainpower away from the automated vehicle and toward the
intersection. It's no more efficient for an automated vehicle and
driver to waste time at intersections than it is for a conventional
vehicle and driver.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I believe many intersections are equipped
such that improving signalization is already possible, to one degree
or another. An engineer just needs to get into the control box and
make the adjustments. Might be more complicated than that. Might
not be. One way or another, we need our intersections to do better.
But we've got to give them the algorithms they need to live up to
higher expectations.
An idea I like better than demanding more from our signals is
converting many existing signalized intersections into roundabouts.
Don't go high-tech if low-tech gets the job done, that's how my mind
works.
MOMENTUM readers can help with this project. Got any good
intersection-improvement ideas? Would love to hear them.

SAE International Sections
SAE International sections are local units comprised of 100 or more SAE International members
in a defined technical or geographic area. The purpose of local sections is to meet the technical,
developmental, and personal needs of the SAE members in a given area. For more information,
please visit sae.org/participate/membership/sections.
SAE International Collegiate Chapters
Collegiate Chapters are a way for SAE International student members to get together on their
campus and develop skills in a student-run and -elected environment. Student Members are vital
to the continued success and future of SAE. While your course work teaches you the engineering
knowledge you need, participation in your SAE collegiate chapter can develop or enhance other
important skills, including leadership, time management, project management, communications,
organization, planning, delegation, budgeting, and finance. For more information, or for how to
find your local chapter, please visit sae.org/participate/membership/collegiate-chapters.
