PROPULSION
Opposed-piston diesel
engine
Achates Power (San Diego, California)
announced its co-developed heavyduty
opposed-piston diesel engine has
entered fleet service. The development,
which is funded by the California Air
Resources Board (CARB) and several
other partners, reportedly has produced
the only diesel engine in the
world that is currently capable of meeting
CARB's 2027 regulations, which
require a 90% reduction in emissions of
nitrogen oxide (NOx) compared to current
standards. Achates also states that
this design reduces carbon dioxide
(CO2
) emissions by 10% and achieves
superior fuel efficiency thanks to lower
heat losses, improved combustion and
reduced pumping losses. This engine
currently is in service for Walmart in a
Peterbilt 579 tractor.

Upgraded Jake Brake
Jacobs Vehicle Systems (Bloomfield,
Connecticut) has released an upgraded
version of the company's engine brake.
The upgraded part is available on all
new PACCAR MX-11 heavy-duty diesel
engines. Jacobs states that the electronically
controlled engine brake now
includes a new high-flow solenoid to
facilitate faster, smoother gear shifting,
resulting in easier vehicle operation as
well as reduced fuel consumption.
Jacobs also claims that the high-flow
solenoid allows for faster engine brake
activation, which when coupled with an
engine brake-assisted shifting strategy,
will reduce transmission shift time. The
engine brake will be manufactured at
the company's headquarters in
Bloomfield, Connecticut and delivered
to PACCAR engine plants in the U.S.,
Netherlands and Brazil.

Scalable silicon carbide
inverter
ZF (Northville, Michigan) has announced
a scalable silicon carbide (SiC)
inverter and hairpin e-motor for commercial
vehicles. The company states
that its proprietary
scalable
and
modular SiC
inverter architecture
allows
maximum
flexibility
from 400V to 800V. This inverter reportedly
combines next-generation
power semiconductors and software
algorithms to increase efficiency and
performance and shorten development
cycles. The modular e-motor utilizes a
common electromagnetic design for
the stator and an asynchronous motor
(ASM) or permanent-magnet synchronous
motor (PSM) design for the rotor
with an output range from 75 kW to
400 kW and 400V to 800V.

Hydrogen engine
Cummins Inc. (Columbus, Indiana) debuted
its 15L hydrogen engine at ACT
Expo in Long Beach, California. This engine
is built on the company's new fuelagnostic
platform, which regardless of
fuel type utilizes largely similar components
below the head gasket. Above the
head gasket, each engine has different

components for a variety of fuels that
include diesel, natural gas and H2
. The
15L version is expected to be in full production
in 2027 and will be offered as a
carbon-free fuel solution for multiple
markets. Cummins also said it intends to
produce a 6.7L-displacement H2
engine.

CARB-certified hybrid
system
Allison Transmission (Indianapolis,
Indiana) announced it has received certification
from the California Air Resources
Board (CARB) for the MY 2022 eGen
Flex electric hybrid propulsion system
when paired with Cummins B6.7 and L9
engines. According to Allison, the eGen
Flex can operate in electric-only mode
for up to 10 consecutive miles or 50 minutes
and can operate in full engine-off
mode for more than 50% of its time in
operation. It is also capable of eliminating
engine emissions and noise while
loading and unloading passengers. The
system reportedly improves fuel consumption
by up to 25% compared to a
conventional diesel bus.
