Industrial cobot
Kassow Robots (Copenhagen,
Denmark) introduced the KR1018, an
industrial cobot capable of performing
machine tending
with heavy
metal and
plastic parts,
and carrying
out pick-andplace
tasks at
high payloads.
The 7-axis
KR1018 has a
payload of 18
kg (39.6 lb)
and a reach of
1000 mm (39.3 in.). Kassow states that
the interface and plug-and-play concept
of the 7-axis cobot make it accessible to
small- and medium-sized enterprises.
The company also claims that the seventh
axis gives the KR1018 a small footprint
of 160 x 160 mm (6.3 x 6.3 in.),
increased maneuverability, and a greater
range of motion to perform tasks
such as the loading and unloading of
heavy parts.

Plastic composite
SABIC (Houston, Texas) has collaborated
with Dongfeng Motors (Wuhan, China)
on the development of a plastic composite
hybrid solution to produce a lightweight
truck-mounted toolbox. The application
is made with a combination of
SABIC's STAMAX resin, a long-glass-fiber
polypropylene, and continuous glassfiber
composite laminate inserts via a
single overmolding process. The finished
part is up to 30 percent lighter compared
to a similarly designed steel part
and allows Dongfeng to benefit from the
resulting production efficiencies. In addition
to toolboxes, automotive and commercial-vehicle
applications for this hybrid
solution with STAMAX resin can
potentially include tailgates, seating,
front-end modules and battery housings
for electric vehicles.

Preparation software
Velo3D (Campbell, California) announced
the release of its Flow 3.0 print
preparation software. The new version
supports larger models of parts that can
be manufactured on the company's
Sapphire XC printer, which can produce
parts that are up to 400% larger than
the Sapphire printer. Flow 3.0 also supports
the scheduling of additional lasers
to maximize the efficiency of the
Sapphire XC's eight 1,000-W lasers, and
increased productivity
by up
to 5x compared
to Velo3D's
Sapphire printer.
The company
states
that the software
enables
engineers to
upload a traditional
CAD file,
rather than designing the part for additive
manufacturing. The software also
includes revised scheduling rules to
achieve 98% efficiency of the Sapphire
XC's eight lasers.

Silicone adhesives
Shin-Etsu Silicones (Akron, Ohio) announced
the KER-4410 and KER-4440
silicone adhesives for automotive sensors.
The KER-4410 has an A10 hardness
rating with a tensile strength of 2.3 and
an elongation of 350. The cure time is
10-15 minutes under UV radiation at 23°C
(73.4°F). Shin-Etsu states that it is also
possible to bond the base material after

UV irradiation, therefore making it suitable
for bonding non-transparent members
such as metal to overcome shadow
cure areas. The KER-4440 has a hardness
rating of A43, a tensile strength of
6.1, and an elongation of 430. It also gels
in minutes after UV irradiation, so it is
recommended to perform UV irradiation
after placing the substrate.

Busbar holders
BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany) announced
newly developed thermoplastic
polyurethane busbar holders made
of Elastollan R 2600 FHF. These holders
offer more resistance to thermal cycling
due to an optimized thermal linear.
According to the company, this reduces
the risk of cracks occurring during temperature
changes, which increases the
safety standard. BASF also states that
Elastollan is a halogen-free flame retardant,
therefore achieving the classification
UL94 V-0. Additionally, the TPU
can be processed at lower temperatures,
has a lower density and, due to its
white color, can be easily colored even
with bright pigments.
