Do you anticipate a
breakthrough in AM materials?
I am a materials engineer by
training and grew up as a
materials & process engineer at
Honeywell and Lockheed Martin.
What we looked for in
" breakthroughs " for new
processes was repeatability and
specifications linked to allowables
for design. I hate to say boring is
good but, in materials, the more
boring the better. So I see more
consistency on the horizon and
more specifications are coming
out.
The SAE AMS-AM Committee
has been very active over the last
couple of years in generating
process and materials
specifications.Important too is
the SAE ITC consortia that is
building an industry response to
specification minimums, which is
a necessary step to allowables
via MMPDS. To most, this seems
like a tedious path, but it is
important that the specifications
are built on robust data, which
feed the specification minimums
which feed the allowables used
for creating designs. It's a long
time coming, but if an army

travels on its stomach, engineers travel on
specifications.
What has been the most important recent technical
development in AM equipment?
If we look within a field of process technologies such as
PBF, the advent of multi-laser printers has drastically
increased productivity and therefore the viability. We
now see systems with as many as 12 lasers on the
market and start-ups working on many more than that.
Outside of PBF, binder jetting (BJ) has a lot of people
talking, but few truly understand how it works. When
more people are aware of the design space and stop
comparing it to PBF, then people can start to realize the
benefit.
There are new process technologies coming online
all the time, some of which are a hybrid of several AM
systems and some are a hybrid of legacy subtractive
and AM. At TBGA, we have moved away from trying to
squeeze processes into narrow categories and created
the TBGA Simplified View of AM: How do you create a
