From books to events, SAE
International offers a large
variety of products and
services related to
materials. This
article takes a look
at some of them. Go
to sae.org to learn about all
of them. Update notes that SAE
is expanding its domain into
medical, quantum computing,
and other technologies sharing
many of the same engineering
demands as in mobility.
Events
Many SAE engineering events
address materials in one way or
another. At AeroTech, for
example, one of the sessions will
focus on materials. " HSCR Steel
Competes with 300M Steel " is
the title of a paper (not yet
published) to be presented by
Gregory Vartanov, a repeat
AeroTech paper presenter. His is
one of eight materials
presentations scheduled (as of
December 5).
Asked by Update for a
description of his upcoming
paper, Vartanov said: " Cobaltfree,
quenched, and tempered

supplementing structural
welds and significantly
increasing rigidity and
aiding collision
performance.
steel alloy ( " HSCR steel " ) provides the same strength,
ductility, and toughness as the 300M steel, and it
possesses corrosion resistance
in salt spray testing. Aerospace
applications of the wrought
HSCR steel include landing gear
components, structure
components, rotatable shafts,
actuators, flap tracks, slat tracks,
and fasteners. Around 33,000 lb
of the EAF-VAR melted and hot
forged and rolled bars of the
HSCR steel have been
manufactured at Deutsche
Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel
GmbH & Co KG (DEW). One
global aerospace company is
planning testing of the HSCR steel. "
There are six co-organizers of the AeroTech
