TECH FOCUS: TESTiNg Standards point the way for testing excellence Paraphrasing George Box, the prominent British statistician, essentially all tests are wrong. Still, some are useful, which means that every test is a simplified version of a set of real-world behaviors and environments of the vehicle, a vehicle module, or a component. A test must be an effective and good-enough tool to help the engineer make a better decision or create new knowledge for future ones. We need to constantly improve standards and procedures to develop a shared engineering library of better tests with industry peers. SAE is a leader in setting best practices and standards by connecting engineers worldwide to remedy this. I joined SAE and became engaged in its activities in 2001. I am grateful for the opportunity the industry has given me to chair the Brake Dynamometer Standards and the Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committees. I am also Vice Chair of the Brake Lining and the Truck and Bus Hydraulic Brake Committees. I coordinate three task forces on new recommended practices using inertia dynamometers to ensure I make tangible contributions. Among them are significant revision of the SAE J2521 for squeal noise for passenger cars and light trucks; the upcoming SAE J3211 (also squeal noise) for vehicles with regenerative braking; and J3190 for corrosion effects. For commercial vehicles equipped Six Square Test System evaluates the durability and integrity of axle gear sets. 22 June 2022 UPDATE LINK Group
