Standards as the baseline for innovation

Innovation is an elusive concept. Inevitably,
it involves some type of change, but how
and to what extent? The threshold is hard
to establish - at a minimum, it needs to be
contemplated relative to industry, and in
terms of its end use.
For simplicity, we will define innovation as
the intersection between novelty and utility.
Incidentally, something that is considered
'innovative' in the automotive industry,
might not be so 'novel' in the aerospace or
semiconductor industry. Regardless,
novelty necessarily involves enhanced
product design and often advanced
material systems. Increasingly,
manufacturing is of great import.
Historically, aerospace has been lauded
as a leader of new materials development
for heavy industrial products. This spans
from damage-tolerant Duralumin
(aluminum) introduced in Germany in the
1940s, to titanium for the aerostructure in
the 1950s, superalloys for the engine
(directionally optimized for the turbine
blades) in the 1960s, and carbon fiber
composites for both the aerostructure and
engine (also optimized with anisotropic
properties) in the 1980s. In the past decade,
the aerospace industry has also embraced
additive manufacturing (AM). Inevitably,

this offers both opportunities and
challenges.
Similar to composites, metal additive
manufacturing can produce anisotropic
properties, and is considered highly
process-sensitive or, more colloquially, a
" process-intensive material " (PIM). Thus,
the manufacturing process (i.e. the recipe)
is vitally important. This construct needs to
be fixed and sufficiently stable, per federal
regulation, to produce certified critical
flight hardware for civil aircraft.
But how can we deterministically outline
and define this process without overly
