Delivering on the promise of electric vehicles
Inflation Reduction Act rebates
notwithstanding, an unreliable
charging experience will leave
consumers wary of adopting
electric vehicles. Transportation
accounted for 27% of U.S.
greenhouse gas emissions
(GHGs) in 2020. Making this
sector cleaner is essential to
mitigate global warming. And
that means making EV charging
more reliable.
Solving this and other
challenges to EVs requires new
approaches to how companies
use data, design vehicles, think
about infrastructure, and train a
new generation of workers.
In our study, data from failed
charging sessions shared by a
handful of partners helped us
categorize, name, and analyze
those failures - the first steps to
fixing them. As $7.5 billion in
National Electric Vehicle
Infrastructure (NEVI) funding
flows from the U.S. federal
government to states, these data
will be critical in proving that
taxpayer dollars are going to
make a more sustainable planet.
Yet these same data contain
consumer and competitive
information that leave
companies reluctant to release
them for broader, more scaled

analyses that are required to create a consistently
dependable EV experience.
There are ways forward. The aerospace sector does
not compete on safety or reliability and has a long
history of sharing data on a pre-competitive basis.
When accidents happen or problems occur,
investigations are opened and results are shared
without compromising personal information or
competitive secrets. That is why the dense, global
web of planes and passengers, control towers and
terminals, remains remarkably effective.
The industries that support EV development can
learn from this model. Our cars look and function
nothing like the isolated metal boxes of the past.
Today we drive and ride in rolling nodes integrated in
an information-dense infrastructure that encompasses
telecommunications, the electrical grid, the
environment and, ultimately, ourselves: our identities,
finances and consumption patterns. Data are a
company's currency of innovation in this new context.
They are also key to safety, and to understanding
transportation's impact on " the common, " the natural
resources we also share and for which we are
responsible.
This does not mean business need be an altruism
expedition. On the contrary, data disclosure belongs
to new industrial processes businesses must develop
to win and to achieve net zero emission
transportation. Take, for example, the batteries that
