How CAE data could drive battery and
electric motor design and validation

During the planning stages of the 2023
WCX conference, Marc LeDuc, the Content
Development Manager in the Engineering
Events Group at SAE International,
recognized the importance of battery
development in the transition to lowcarbon
vehicles. He emphasized the crucial
role that CAE (computer-aided
engineering) can play in optimizing
engineering design, particularly in terms of
expediting the process for engineers who
are working against the clock. Echoing
Marc's insights, SAE Fellow and Senior
Fellow of Stellantis, Dr. Yung-Li LEE, and
SAE Fellow and CAE Technical Lead of
Ford, Dr. Gavin Song, shared a vision for a
technical panel on the Design, Analysis, and
Validation of Battery Packs and Electrical
Motors, underscoring the significance of
this topic at WCX.

worked in close collaboration to strategize

the panel, delineating its scope and
extending invitations to panelists hailing
from internationally renowned companies.
The panel's main objective was to delve
into the fundamental aspects of
understanding the battery and electric
motor of BEVs, and explore how the CAE
process can aid in optimizing engineering
design. As a pivotal component of BEV
engineering design, the battery is a
complex system that encompasses
electrochemical-thermal-mechanical
coupling, and necessitates a high degree of
