Jon Aldred, the Director of Prenscia Product
Management at Hottinger Bruel & Kjaer Inc., was the
only speaker to discuss battery fatigue during the
panel. He emphasized a critical area of concern,
namely the warranty costs associated with batteries.
Jon noted that in addition to their electro-chemistry,
EV batteries are complex mechanical systems
consisting of thousands of cells connected by metallic
connections and welds. As a result, OEMs are finding
that vibration-induced fatigue is a significant failure
mode that progressively degrades battery
performance. Given that validating these designs
requires years of experience, simulation plays a critical
role in enhancing these designs and mitigating the
high costs associated with battery replacement.
Satheesh KANDASAMY, the Industry Process Expert
Director at DASSAULT SYSTEMES/SIMULIA
Corporation, shared his insights on the challenges
facing electric-drive development, including the
compressed time-to-market, the demand for
innovation, and numerous unknown engineering
obstacles. Satheesh noted that developing highquality
electric propulsion systems within such a short
development cycle requires innovative technologies
and expertise that go beyond internal-combustion
engine technology. A trusted, deeper partnership
between electric drive developers and simulation
solution providers is crucial in developing solutions to
the new engineering challenges that arise, which will
ultimately enable vehicle manufacturers to design and
deliver top-quality vehicles within budget and on
time. Such a partnership will also drive the
development of innovative solutions that set one
