SAE journal offers lessons and
insights on sustainable mobility
in each scenario may change

society. Considering the
complex real-world applications,
internal combustion engine
(ICE) and hybrid systems should
receive modest attention, at
least in the short to medium
term. New engine technologies
and alternative fuels (i.e., natural
gas, hydrogen, biofuel, and
e-fuel) enable low CO2
emissions. Meanwhile, state-ofthe-art
aftertreatment
technologies can achieve nearzero
emission of HCs, NOx, and
particulate matter. This special
issue, entitled 'Emission and
Energy Efficiency of Vehicles
with Different Power Systems,'
provides insights into new
developments and research on
future automotive power
systems, focusing on engine and
aftertreatment technologies,
biofuel, hybrid electric vehicle
(HEV) and electric vehicle (EV)
optimization, and lightweight
materials. The authors are from
different sectors of the
automotive community and
present new measurement and
diagnosis instruments, modeling
and optimization approaches,
and reviews and comments on
