SAE's AAM Steering
Group gaining airspeed
successful aircraft in aviation history. Founded in 2015,
Lilium's headquarters and manufacturing facilities are
in Munich, Germany, with teams based across Europe
and the U.S.
Lilium recently announced that it has received
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) G-1
Certification Basis necessary for type certificate
validation of its Lilium Jet. In 2020, Lilium's primary
airworthiness authority, the European Union Aviation
Safety Agency (EASA), had issued its certification
basis for the Lilium Jet.
To enable global operations, Lilium is pursuing
concurrent certification of the Lilium Jet through
validation by the FAA under the provisions of the
Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement between the EU
and U.S. Lilium is one of a few eVTOL companies
seeking dual certification in the EU and the U.S. and
the only pioneer holding both an EASA and FAA
certification basis for a powered-lift eVTOL aircraft.
Update caught up with a member of SAE's recently
formed AAM Steering Group to see where it is
headed. We also asked Lilium CTO Alastair McIntosh
about some other relevant matters. Here's what he
had to say.
What is the most significant technical challenge for
industry (and for your company) in development of
UAM aircraft, and how are you facing it?
As a new emerging aviation 'sector,' new
airworthiness regulations and associated means/
methods of compliance are required that bring a
range of different technical challenges. A couple of
examples are energy storage systems (i.e., in the
area of future cell technology, battery performance
modeling, and aging) and flight procedures for
Instrument Flight Rules operation. We are addressing

such items by frequent
interaction with EASA and FAA
and working closely with
EUROCAE. We are also
leveraging state aviation
programs to advance research
in these fields, such as the
German Luftfahrtforschungs
programme (LuFo) and the
European SESAR3 Joint
Undertaking.
What is the most significant
non-technical hurdle to UAM
development, and what is your
company or organization doing
to clear it?
OEMs, operators, airports and
other infrastructure operators,
suppliers, and of course
authorities, regulators and
politicians need to work
together to establish a
completely new ecosystem. We
cannot achieve our anticipated
market launch in 2025/26
without their support and
continued work. New rules are
required for infrastructure
design and approval processes,
and tailored solutions are
needed for airspace integration
and for flight operations.
