efficient financial support from
governments to bring this
capital-intense venture to
market. In the field of aviation, it
often takes well over a billion
euros to get from an idea to a
certified product. Speaking from
the perspective of a European
company based in Germany,
Europe needs to do more if it
wants to keep highly innovative
and agile companies that focus
on delivering promising clean
aviation solutions. The European
funding landscape is good, but
there is a gap for highly
innovative yet capital-intensive
projects. Thus far, we have
found that the funding
programs for this category of
companies are designed far too
narrowly and are often too
small.
Are there any UAM aircraft
currently in commercial use in
any city, and if not, when do you
expect that to happen?
Based on technical progress and
EASA regulatory advancements,
UPDATE
our current key milestones towards EIS include start
of final assembly of the type-conforming aircraft this
year, first manned flight in the second half of 2024,
and type certification in late 2025 with EIS thereafter.
What is the biggest misconception among the public
about UAM?
Regional air mobility vs urban 'air taxi' mobility. The
biggest misconception is that all eVTOL are air taxis
focusing on short-range UAM, which are all drones/
unmanned. This is not the case and is leading to
misperceptions among political stakeholders and the
broader public with the unjustifiable risk of impacting
social acceptance of this new form of air mobility.
Lilium focuses on regional mobility (170 km + and not
30-40 km) to connect cities/regions using scheduled
services with 4-6 passengers on board (unlike taxis)
and will be piloted for the foreseeable future.
How important is SAE in relation to any of the issues
mentioned in the questions above?
SAE is an enabler. SAE offer an environment where
the experts of our industries can exchange, including
with authorities. The outcomes of SAE - documents,
training, events, etc. - will be help us to pave the way
for introduction of new technologies and new
architectures. SAE is an adaptative organization that
react on industry evolution. It is important, as an
industry, to be strongly connected to the SAE to
ensure developments in the right direction.
Technology is the key topic, particularly in
understanding behavior in normal and abnormal
conditions. Automotive and aerospace are going to
share a lot in electric technologies. It is important to
create the appropriate bridges in SAE for
effectiveness. n
