EXPERT ADVICE: TIPS
FOR PUBLISHING PAPERS
LET'S FACE IT: PUBLISHING IS A LOT OF WORK. As if recording every minute detail from your methodologies isn't painful enough,
you have to confirm accurate data, put everything into words, and then decide exactly which journal is the perfect home for your
research.
Like it or not, for many students and post-docs, publishing is a necessary step for the advancement of career and education (to
say nothing of progressing one's respective field). It's hard work, but fret not, early-career authors: it's also totally achievable. The
Editors-in-Chief of several SAE International journals are here to give you some advice.
The editors gave the following responses when asked, " What advice would you give to a student researcher who is new to the
world of publishing? "

To thrive in the world of publishing as a
student researcher, these are the key
principles I suggest to follow: Firstly, immerse
yourself in reading to grasp your field's
nuances and publishing conventions.
Secondly, prioritize clarity and conciseness in
your writing, ensuring it's well-structured and
evidence-supported. Thirdly, uphold ethical
standards by citing sources meticulously and
avoiding plagiarism. Lastly, view rejection as a
chance to learn and grow, utilizing feedback to
enhance your work and persist in your
publishing pursuits.

To those who are new to the publishing world, my suggestion is to start off by
reading research articles from numerous journals to get a sense of the
different styles and the layout of typical published work. In this process, it is
important to pay attention to what approaches come across to you as the
reader as particularly innovative or engaging to inform your own writing/
presentation of findings. I would also suggest reaching out to mentors or
professors who are well published to understand the top journals in your
discipline and any advice they may have about approaching publication.
Attending conferences is also a useful opportunity to see the types of work
that gets public dissemination and attention, and can also serve as a useful
venue for networking and reaching potential research collaborators. SAE
