Five of the department's faculty
members have won SAE
International's Ralph R. Teetor
Educational Award-Laine Mears,
Beshah Ayalew, Ralph Meyer,
Rob Prucka, Yunyi Jia, and Ben
Lawler-but that tells only part
of the story; at least six other
award recipients were on
Clemson's faculty at one time
and are now at other institutions,
underscoring that Clemson is a
major draw and incubator for top
automotive engineering talent.
Strategic and sophisticated
To develop Deep Orange 14,
students worked with faculty
and staff at CU-ICAR, along with
the project's primary sponsor,
the U.S. Army DEVCOM Ground
Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC).

Clemson Ph.D. student
presents at SAE's WCX
Off-road vehicles are increasingly adopting hybrid and
electric powertrains for improved mobility, range, and
energy efficiency. However, their cooling systems
consume a significant amount of energy, affecting the
vehicle's operating range. Meet Anirudh Sundar, a
Clemson Ph.D. student who presented his technical
paper, Energy-Aware Predictive Control for the Battery
Thermal Management System of an Autonomous OffRoad
Vehicle, at SAE's WCX earlier this year. Sundar
discovered the importance of energy-aware predictive
control when he was part of Clemson's Deep Orange 13
project, where he worked on the powertrain team with a
focus on electronics, controls, and vehicle dynamics. n

Clemson announced its strategic partnership with
GVSC in 2020 when the university founded its Virtual
Prototyping of Autonomy-Enabled Ground Systems
(VIPR-GS) center, backed by the U.S. Department of
Defense. The partnership was designed to propel
research breakthroughs in off-road vehicle autonomy,
powertrain electrification, and digital engineering
tools to more effectively support the mission of GVSC.
