Flexibility, sustainability core
of startup's motor magic
The biggest difference between
a living startup and a dead one is
the quality of its product. This is
true across any industry, but let's
face it-mobility can be
particularly difficult for
newcomers.
But Torev Motors has
something special: the world's
first double-axial flux motor for
automotive, marine, aerospace,
and industrial markets. It's no
wonder Torev was one of four
winners at this year's Global
Automotive & Mobility
Innovation Challenge (GAMIC),
an annual startup competition
that seeks to identify and
support the industry's best
emerging technology
companies. As in past years, the
16th annual GAMIC finals were
held on-site during WCX, SAE's
World Congress Experience, an
event that brings together over
15,000 mobility experts from
across the globe. A pretty good
spot for startups looking to gain
some recognition, to be sure.
Finalists were selected from a
pool of over 1,500 applicants and
competition was fierce. This

year's winners included startups Natrion, SkillReal,
Soteria, and-of course-Torev Motors. Torev's
patented motor doesn't just offer flexibility with its
wide range of applications; it's sustainable to the core,
with a unique stator structure that significantly
reduces rare earth metal consumption without
sacrificing power or efficiency.
Rory Brogan, founder and CEO of Torev Motors,
graciously agreed to a Q&A session with Update. Read
on to learn about his venture's innovative motor, its

When you first designed your motor, was reducing
rare earth metal consumption one of your main
goals? Or was it a happy accident?
The idea of Torev originally started out
as an unsponsored research project of
sorts. I have always been passionate
about how people and things move
from one place to another and the
rise of electrification seemed to
present an opportunity for
innovation. I was fascinated by
motors, and I was a new engineer
looking for ways to do things that
had not been tried before. I quickly
realized that rare earth consumption is a
challenge, especially so at the quantities
currently needed to sustain a fully electrified
