Emulating real world ecosystem
before hitting the road
As the EV ecosystem evolves
to include faster charging stations
and integration with the grid, the
battery management system must
be able to account for a wider
range of real-world scenarios to
ensure safe battery operations
and to help extend battery life.
Besides testing the pack architecture,
battery designers must carry out
extensive tests to emulate realworld
environments, such as:
* Interaction of all the components
involved with the pack, and
their mutual impact
* Internal communication of all electrical
and mechanical components
* External communication with
the charging station and grid
* Thermal and electrical reactions of the
battery pack and thermal management
An application area that is gaining
momentum is V2G-enabled EVs,
where instead of the classical oneway
power flow from the charging
station to the EV battery, the
battery can supply electricity back
to the power grid to help balance
the grid in times of high usage.
Studies have been carried out to see
if frequent usage of the EV in V2GEV

mode will cause capacity and power
fade. While useful for early prognosis,
it is also important to analyze the
impact towards the battery's endof-life
stage where the degradation
rate can become exponential.
Advancements in emulation
capabilities are helping battery
designers test real-world scenarios
faster and more accurately. Instead of
using actual devices, developers now
rely on emulators to test for dynamic,
electrical, and even climatic stress.
Emulating a wide range of
scenarios requires a system that can
handle thousands of test channels
simultaneously. The system should
also integrate with the company's lab
management software platform so
lab managers can better utilize their
resources and the massive amount of
data collected from each cell, module,
or pack to improve design iterations.
While extensive system-wide
emulation testing in the research
and design phase can help ensure
performance and safety specifications
are met, quality checkpoints along
the high-volume manufacturing
process also play a critical role in
the final battery quality and cost.

to production
The transition from battery design to
manufacturing requires a thoroughly
