Battery Technology - May 2021 - 18

Summit Preview

Ping Liu, Ph.D., Professor
of Nanoengineering and
Director, Sustainable Power
and Energy Center, University
of California San Diego (UCSD)
Prior to his current position, Dr. Liu was
a Program Director at ARPA-E, where he
initiated and managed research programs in energy storage for electric vehicles. Ping's group at UCSD studies chemistry and materials for next-generation
batteries, driving advancements in fast
charging, safety, energy density, and lowtemperature operation.

NAVAL/MARITIME BATTERY
TECHNOLOGY NEEDS
Electric hybrid power and propulsion
systems represent the future of naval and
maritime operations. Legacy power systems, such as diesel and gas turbines,
can't deliver the electrical power needed
to handle the complex profiles that will
be demanded by tomorrow's ships. Countering this problem will require the
implementation of sophisticated controls
and energy storage systems. Find out
how you can help deliver what's needed.

Robert Galyen, Fellow,
Chairman, Battery
Standards Steering
Committee, SAE
International
SAE International Fellow Bob Galyen
serves as liaison to the MVC and China
Automotive Advisory Councils for SAE
International. Bob is also NAATBatt International's Chairman Emeritus and CTO,
serves on the boards of multiple corporations and associations in the U.S., and is
the President of Galyen Energy. Bob is the
retired Chief Technical Officer of CATL,
the world's largest lithium-ion battery
manufacturing company.

ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT BATTERY
TECHNOLOGY
What is the current state of electric aircraft battery technology? Fossil fuels
produce 100 times more energy than
batteries and adding more batteries to
aircraft increases weight as well as the
risk of chemical and fire hazards. Join us
for an illuminating panel discussion to
find out how we're overcoming these
challenges.

INTEGRATED SOLDIER POWER AND
DATA SYSTEMS
Integrated Soldier Power and Data
Systems (ISPDS) technology enables simultaneous connectivity and control
over data transmission and power management of multiple wearable devices.
The key to making ISPDS work, however,
is designing more efficient, effective
energy storage devices to lighten the
load for soldiers who now carry multiple
devices to complete their missions.

James Bond, Applications
Engineering Manager,
EaglePicher® Technologies
At EaglePicher Technologies - a leading producer of
batteries, battery management systems,
and energetic devices - James Bond
focuses on technology selection and
integration for the company's aerospace
and defense customers. He was the original lead engineer for the company's first
battery management system used in
commercial aviation.

Ehud Palgi, Co-Founder and
CTO, Techaya
Serving as the main architect at Techaya - a leading manufacturer of solutions
for the military, security, and surveillance
markets - Ehud Palgi manages the company's research and development team
and leads the design, development, and
vision of all products. He has more than
25 years of in-field networking and
cybersecurity knowledge.

Surya Moganty, Ph.D., CTO,
NOHMs Technologies
NOHMs Technologies'
mission is to provide materials and chemistry for longerlasting, safer, and more sustainable lithium-ion batteries. Dr. Moganty is an
expert in hybrid materials, ionic liquid
electrolytes, electrochemistry, and process engineering. Prior to joining NOHMs,
he was a Process Engineer at Intel
Corporation.

Brandon Robinson, Chief
Executive Officer and
Co-Founder, Horizon Aircraft
Horizon Aircraft is an advanced aerospace engineering
company that has developed one of the
world's first eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft that can fly 98
percent of its mission exactly like a normal aircraft. James is a retired RCAF CF18 fighter pilot.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16
SOLID STATE: NO LONGER IF, BUT
WHEN AND HOW
Development of solid-state batteries
for automotive applications appears to be
in its final phase. What's left to overcome?
Will solid-state batteries be an immediate
and cost-competitive replacement for our
current lithium-ion technology? Don't
miss this opening session of the day's
automotive-focused lineup.

THE STARTUP PERSPECTIVE
This panel discussion offers insight
and advice from startup companies. The
speakers describe their favored battery
chemistries, explain how they plan to
advance their chosen designs, and detail
the unique challenges of supplying
smaller electric vehicle manufacturers.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO
and Co-Founder, StoreDot
Dr. Doron Myersdorf cofounded StoreDot in 2012 to
develop extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology utilizing
nanoscale metalloids and proprietary
compounds to overcome a major barrier
to electric vehicle adoption: range and
charging anxiety. Prior to that, he was
Senior Director of SanDisk SSD Business
Unit, establishing and managing the division in Israel.
