A new method enables efficient design and fabrication of soft robots using a 3D printer.

obotic assistants are expected to become
increasingly marketable as
caregivers; however, the external hard
structure of current caregiving robots
prevents them from establishing a safe
human-robot interaction. Recent advances
in material science have enabled
the fabrication of robots with deformable
bodies or the ability to reshape
when touched, but the complex design,
fabrication, and control of soft robots
currently hinders the commercialization
of this technology and its use for athome
applications.
Researchers have developed a new
design method that enables the design
and fabrication of soft robots using a 3D
printer. The design process involves
three steps. First, a user makes a computer-aided
design file with the shape of
the robot. The user then paints the
CAD file to show which directions the
different joints of the soft robot will
move. A computer algorithm takes a
few seconds to convert the CAD model
into a 3D architected soft machine
(ASM) that can be printed using any
conventional 3D printer.
The architected soft machines move
like humans but instead of muscles, they
rely on miniaturized motors that pull
from nylon lines tied to the ends of their
reduced

limbs. They can be squeezed and stretched
to more than 900 percent of their
original length.
The ASMs can perform complex motions
such as gripping or crawling - a
step forward toward the development of
autonomous and lightweight soft robots.
Robot Senses Hidden Objects
The system uses penetrative radio frequency to pinpoint items, even when they're hidden
from view.

esearchers have developed a robot
that uses radio waves, which can pass
through walls, to sense occluded objects.
The robot, called RF-Grasp, combines
this powerful sensing with more
traditional computer vision to locate
and grasp items that might otherwise be
blocked from view. The advance could
one day streamline warehouse operations
or help a machine pluck a screwdriver
from a jumbled toolkit.

Warehouse work is still usually the domain
of humans, not robots, despite sometimes
dangerous working conditions.
That's in part because robots struggle to
locate and grasp objects in such a crowded
environment. Using optical vision alone,
robots can't perceive the presence of an
item packed away in a box or hidden behind
another object on the shelf because
visible light waves don't pass through walls
- but radio waves can.

Radio frequency (RF) identification
systems have two main components: a
reader and a tag. The tag is a tiny computer
chip that gets attached to or, in the
case of pets, implanted in the item to be
tracked. The reader then emits an RF
signal, which gets modulated by the tag
and reflected back to the reader. The reflected
signal
provides
information
about the location and identity of the
tagged item.
