other sustainable aviation fuels by
increasing the density and, perhaps most
importantly, the ring-swelling potential of
blends, " Heyne said. " While meeting our
material needs, these sustainable blends
confer higher energy densities and specific
energies without using aromatics. "

Unprinting Method Removes Toner with Xenon Light
This method can help recycle paper and curb environmental costs.

A
method was created to unprint pa per
that, unlike laser-based methods, can
work with the standard, coated paper used
in home and office printers. The new method
uses intense pulses of light from a xenon
lamp and can erase black, blue, red, and
green toners without damaging the paper.
The method makes it possible to unprint
and then reprint on the same paper at least
five times, which is typically as many times
paper can be reused with conventional recycling.
By eliminating the steps involved in
conventional recycling, the unprinting
method could reduce energy costs, pollution,
and greenhouse gas emissions.

emissions, chemical pollution, and energy
use, according to the study. Extending
the life of paper while avoiding these recycling
steps would yield significant environmental
benefits.
The next steps are to further refine
the method by testing additional toner
colors on a wider range of paper types.
Unprinting can be done with simple
equipment and a wipe with a very
small amount of benign alcohol. Researchers
are working to integrate unprinting
with typical office and home
printers.

Steam Generator Uses Sunlight to Purify Water
A high-efficiency steam generator that purifies and desalinates water can be built using
cheap and natural materials such as cellulose.

esearchers have developed an inexpensive
and eco-friendly steam generator
to desalinate and purify water using
sunlight. The rate of steam
production is four to five times higher
than that of direct water evaporation.
The steam generator consists of an aerogel
that contains a cellulose-based structure
decorated with the organic conjugated
polymer PEDOT:PSS. The polymer has
the ability to absorb the energy in sunlight
in the infrared part of the spectrum where
much of the Sun's heat is transported. The
aerogel has a porous nanostructure, which
means that large quantities of water can be
absorbed into its pores. A 2-mm layer of
this material can absorb 99 percent of the
energy in the Sun's spectrum.

and the aerogel so that the steam generator
is kept afloat. The heat from the
Sun vaporizes the water, while salt and
other materials remain behind. The
durable aerogel can be cleaned in, for
example, salt water so that it can be
used again immediately. This can be
repeated many times. The water that
passes through the system by evaporation
becomes very high-quality drinking
water.

All the materials are eco-friendly -
the system uses nanocellulose and a polymer
that has a very low impact on the
environment and people. Very small
amounts of material are used; the aerogel
is made up of 90 percent air.
