WHO releases category specific benchmarks for sodium
The World Health Organization (WHO) projects
that by 2035 nearly half the US population will have
some form of cardiovascular disease at an annual
cost of $1.1 trillion. Recently the WHO announced
new global sodium benchmarks for different food
categories. This guidance builds on the work and
experiences of countries and regions in setting
targets for sodium levels in different food categories.
These targets are part of national and regional
efforts to reduce population salt intake, reduce the
burden of diet and nutrition-related noncommunicable
diseases and achieve the global target for a
30% reduction in daily salt consumption by 2025.
" There is progress being made not only in product
reformulation, but also through public awareness
and educational campaigns, labeling requirements,
and voluntary and mandatory sodium reduction
targets, " said Mr. Knudson. " Many countries are recognizing
that sodium reduction is necessary for the
health of their citizens, and we believe NuTek will be
the leader in the fight against heart disease caused
by sodium overconsumption. "
" There is progress being made not
only in product reformulation, but
also through public awareness and
educational campaigns, labeling
requirements, and voluntary and
mandatory sodium reduction targets. "
The WHO estimates that 11 million deaths globally
are associated with poor diet, 3 million of which
are attributed to high sodium intake. Additionally,
while more is being discovered about COVID-19,
studies have shown that the most common underlying
condition in the mortality rate of patients is
cardiovascular disease (CVD). Over consumption
of sodium is the leading cause of CVD which is
now the #1 cause of death globally.
NuTek Natural Ingredients has pledged support
for the WHO's new guidance and has been on a
journey to improve global health through sodium
reduction using potassium salt that provides a 1:1
substitute for sodium in foods and results in a clean
label, great tasting, healthier balance of salts.
" The new WHO sodium benchmarks are a good
tool for manufacturers to reformulate products
with lower sodium and ensure food safety requirements
are met. This is a significant step forward
for global health and consumers' understanding of
the importance of sodium reduction as part of a
healthy lifestyle. " commented Mr. Knudson.
