going retro
For those of you who have yet to turn 50, the notion of going retro may involve a nostalgic weekend of watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Breakfast Club. This troubles me, probably because I was already out of college by then, and my idea of an oldies radio station is Elvis Presley, not Elvis Costello. Yes, I am old. My teenage daughter reminds me of this when she explains – with glee – that my brain is already packed full of information, and I have no more capacity to learn. Roshi Muns, owner of Society Bakery in Dallas and the subject of our cover story this month, is one of a growing number of bakery owners who are embracing the retro movement successfully by introducing new products that connect with customers in a positive manner. Her bread pudding whoopie pies and coconut cream pie cupcakes offer delicious examples of “retro with a twist.” What this means for you is that consumers are hungry for comfort foods like coconut cream pie in a more convenient platform like a cupcake. I introduce the subject of nostalgia because Americans continue to be in a retro state of mind. The more stressful our daily lives become, the more we long for simpler times. We forget that those simpler times were not really simpler, but our memories have faded – remember? The list of bakeries enjoying success on the retro road is long What matters most of all is that we are reaching back in time for comfort. And this is where the bakery business comes in. and getting longer. There’s no time like the present to tap into America’s growing fascination with their past. My suggestion is to research the local food history of where your bakery operates to find unique products that people remember with fondness. Then put your own signature stamp on it.
