PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Situated today on a quiet street corner in Joplin, MO, where a deadly F5 tornado ripped through the city a year ago, two notable bakeries operate side by side on South Main Street — one representing the retail bakery industry’s past, the other distinguishing its future. Dude and Caroline Pendergraft opened Dude’s Daylight Donuts in 1954 as the first independently owned Daylight Donut shop in the country. For more than a half century, they operated on a simple principle: Serve greattasting donuts and make everyone who walks through the door feel at home. Then on May 22, 2011, a tornado destroyed their home and their business, and it took the lives of 159 people in the hometown they loved.

of the one piece of equipment that survived the tornado: a blue 1950s NCR cash register. Their donut shop still operates as a cash-only business, just as they did 58 years ago. Anyone who spends an hour at Dude’s Daylight Donuts understands why it works. The Pendergrafts could give seminars on customer service excellence: Both greet each and every customer who walks in with a smile, Dude from behind the workbench where he is cutting dough, Caroline from behind the counter. On one Friday morning, more than a hundred people of Joplin stop in to buy donuts from their good friends. This is like home. The irony is that the future of the retail bakery business might be right next door. This is where Liz Easton operates a dessert boutique shop, Cupcakes by Liz, that’s open every Friday and Saturday evening from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Easton opened a cake and cupcake shop a year before the 2011 tornado struck. Just like the Pendergrafts, Easton lost her home and her business. She decided to fight back and rebuild Cupcakes by Liz at a new location on South Main, adjacent to Dude’s Daylight Donuts. The store celebrated a successful reopening on June 1. Fortunately in a city full of people who are clinging to the past and looking forward to a bright future, they can now have their cake and donuts, too.

Dude nearly died, not from the tornado, but from a bout of pneumonia he came down with after sorting through the wreckage. At first, he thought there was no reason to rebuild the donut shop. And yet there were his children who worked at the bakery to consider. What would they do? Only a parent understands. So the family decided to reopen, and completed the task months after the vicious storm. Today, Dude says he misses their old proof box and glaze machine and asks where he might find another. Caroline smiles and tells the story
