Extreme Cupcakes
There’s no sign of slowing demand for cupcakes, and America’s
favorite cupcake shops are pushing the limits of artistic design
and fl avor explosion.
Sweet Potato Pie Cupcakes are one of many unique seasonal
fl avors available at Just Baked, a cupcake shop and bakery with
13 locations in southeastern Michigan. The original Just Baked
location is just outside of Detroit in Livonia, MI. Just Baked
produces dozens of fun fl avors, including such local favorites as
Faygo cupcakes — infused with authentic Faygo soda pop. Just
Baked has a special co-branded licensing deal with Faygo, a
longtime Michigan soda maker that was founded in 1907.
Back by popular demand, Sprinkles Cupcakes serves up its own
creative version of S’mores — in a cupcake featuring graham
cracker-lined Belgian dark chocolate cake fi lled with bittersweet
chocolate ganache and topped with toasted marshmallow
frosting. The Beverly Hills, CA-based cupcake shop has grown
to 10 locations across the country, and its increasingly popular
Cupcake ATMs (where shoppers can buy Sprinkles cupcakes 24
hours a day) are now located in Beverly Hills and Chicago.
Raspberry Swirl is one of many creative fl avors available at
Crumbs Bake Shop, the nation’s largest cupcake bakery chain,
which just reported that net third-quarter sales increased 11.5%
to $9.9 million. During the quarter, Crumbs opened two mallbased
stores in Burlington, MA, and Garden City, NY, as well as
one store in Manhattan, NY. Next up, Crumbs plans to open one
store in downtown Philadelphia, one mall-based store in New
Jersey and fi ve mall-based kiosks. The Crumbs chain has blossomed
to 57 locations; the fi rst Crumbs opened in March 2003.

Cannoli Cupcakes are a local favorite at Moreno Bakery in
the Tampa suburb of Brandon, FL. Moreno Bakery, opened
in 2008, is locally owned and operated by Susan and Jose
Moreno. Moreno Bakery off ers cakes and cupcakes, plus a lot
more: pastries, breads, pies, cookies and deli sandwiches, especially
Cuban sandwiches made with Genoa salami (a Tampa
tradition). Because the Tampa area is home to a diverse mix
of diff erent cultures, such as Jewish and Italian, there is ample
demand for everything from rugelach to cannoli. The bakery
makes a Cannoli Cupcake topped with one chocolate-covered
cannoli on top of a yellow cupcake iced with vanilla buttercream.

Retro is all the rage at Retro Bakery, which off ers more than
24 fl avors of cupcakes baked fresh daily. Among the local
favorites is the popular Milk & Cookies Cupcake – made with
chocolate-chip cake and topped with vanilla buttercream and
a freshly baked chocolate-chip cookie. Retro Bakery opened in
the Centennial Hills area of Las Vegas on February 10, 2008. At
Retro, it’s all about the buttercream, and owners Kari and Brian
Haskell mean it! Their goal is to create the most moist, most
uniquely-fl avored cupcakes and cakes you’ve ever eaten.
Once power was restored to lower Manhattan in the wake of
Hurricane Sandy, Georgetown Cupcake SoHo resumed baking
its famous cupcakes for New Yorkers. Sisters Katherine Kallinis
Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne are co-founders of
Georgetown Cupcake, stars of the hit series DC Cupcakes on
TLC, and best-selling authors of The Cupcake Diaries. Inspired
by their grandmother, in 2008, Katherine and Sophie traded
careers in fashion and venture capital to follow their passion
