When asked what distinguishes the flavor of their

say with a smile. "We use real potatoes." This year, the
bakery chain won a sandwich innovation award for its
pretzel croissant, which features beef, dill and horseradish mayonnaise.

It is clear that fresh, wholesome ingredients play a
huge role in the success of Greenhalghs, which was
founded more than 50 years ago and exemplifies
the standard of excellence of British craft bakeries.
Also evident on our tour is that UK bakeries undergo
extreme scrutiny on the food safety front and go to
great lengths to ensure that products are safe.
There are 4,500 small craft bakeries, 350 medium
sized bakeries and 150 large plant bakeries in the
United Kingdom, according to Euromonitor data.
Artisan craft products here are enjoying a robust 5
percent annual sales growth.
Not unlike in the United States, instore bakeries have
become a source of additional revenue for retail
bakeries in the United Kingdom. Supermarket operator Lidl, for example, has upgraded all of its stores to
include fresh bakeries located by the entrance, aiming
to entice customers with fresh bread and pastries.
Bakeries have more important to supermarkets as
they aim to attract consumers by improving their
shopping experience.
Another prominent bakery on our tour is Slattery,
which is highly regarded in the UK for its fine cakes,
pastries, desserts and chocolates. Founded in 1967,
this third-generation family-run business is located in
Whitefield, Manchester.
This bakery is housed in a three-story building where
they offer bespoke celebration and wedding cakes to
order, and owner John Slattery explains that handmade
luxury chocolates, fresh cream, fancy cake and ice
creams are all made on the premises and sold alongside a range of gifts within the retail shop. The onsite
bakery bakes fresh bread daily and produces delectable
