Structural Concepts announced in November
that all of its self-contained refrigerated display
cases comply with CARB regulations, ahead of
their January implementation. The company's
product development team logged more than
4,000 hours in its research, development, and
product testing facility.  
 The regulations are designed to limit the
growing use of hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs.
The most widely used cooling agent in commercial refrigeration, HFCs have an effect on the
climate. Taking effect in a handful of states on
Jan. 1, new, more stringent regulatory requirements are also in process or under consideration
in several other states. Often a barometer for
nationwide acceptance, broader adoption of the
CARB regulations is expected.  
 Replacing refrigerants in its condensing
units with approved low-emission refrigerants,
SCC's self-contained cases now have approximately one quarter the global warming potential
(GWP) of their predecessors. The new EPAcompliant cases - which are used in both food
service operations and supermarkets - do not
add costs or represent any new maintenance
challenges for customers.  
 According to Danielle McMiller, vice president
of sales and marketing, this accomplishment
builds on a more than 40-year commitment to setting the standard in refrigeration technologies.
"Our focus is on designing and manufacturing displays that help our customers increase
sales and lower costs as consumer demand for
healthier and fresher prepared and ready-to-go
foods escalates," McMiller says. "At the same
time, reducing pollution and protecting the
planet is important to everyone. We're proud to
be able to bring cases to the market that turn
compliance with these new, more stringent
regulatory requirements into an advantage for
our customers." 
 In addition to the new, low-emission display
cases, conversion kits are also available to
bring current equipment up to new regulatory
standards.
