And in 1911 in the bustling heart of Chicago, the Roeser family opened a retail bakery on West North Avenue. Today, Roeser’s Bakery is now run by the third (John Roeser III) and fourth generation (John Roeser IV) and still operates out of the same building. I can’t begin to imagine how much the world has changed around them, and yet the Roeser family persevered by staying true to their passion of producing excellent products and providing excellent service. As Roeser’s Bakery celebrates their 100th birthday this year, it is a good time to reflect on what makes the retail baking business so rewarding. Sure, it can be backbreaking work. But at the end of the day, retail bakery is really about two things: Producing food for the world, and making people smile. So here’s a toast to Roeser’s Bakery and all of the other wonderful family owned bakeries that have survived the years through thick and thin. America just wouldn’t be the same without you.
