DESIGN OF THE TIMES CAKELETS: Small Size, Big Buzz Imagine if you could take the design innovation of a FoodNetwork-worthy cake, box it up and give it as a gift. More than a cupcake, cakelets are mini sculpted cakes that come in anywhere from two to eight servings. And although they are so small they could fit into the palm of your hand, size is no object when it comes to these miniature innovations—they can be sculpted into just about anything your imagination can dream up. “I always loved the idea of singleserving desserts like cupcakes, but a the same time, I was fascinated by beautiful, artistic sculpted cakes,” says Cupcake Envy Owner Amy Eilert, who has blazed a trail on the forefront of this hot new trend. Seeing that mini sculpted cakes were essentially unchartered territory in the cake world, Eilert decided to experiment with some different ideas using cake batter and the pans she had in her cupboard. “That’s when I decided to launch Cupcake Envy,” she says. And she knew she needed an innovative name to go with an innovative product. “Mini cakes could mean petite bundt cakes, cupcakes and miniature stacked cakes,” she says. “I needed a name that would best described them, so we decided to call them Cakelets.” Uses for cakelets are almost as countless as the sculptures themselves. Eilert suggests a cakelet for a party’s guest of honor with coordinating cupcakes for the guests. “The guest of honor deserves something extra special,” she says.
