Cake Couture Today’s cakes are as hot, trendy and coveted as the latest runway fashion trends. by Joanie Spencer These days, you might be as apt to hear, “Who did your cake?” at an event as you are to hear, “Who did your dress?” on the red carpet. As cake design continues to gain momentum in mainstream media, myriad parallels can be drawn between food and fashion, from the obvious replications of designer shoes and handbags, to the care and inspiration required to create them. “I think both industries are very creative and artistic,” says James Roselle, owner of Elle Cakes in Orange County, CA. “In fashion, you work with fabric and cloth. With cake, you work with a substance that feels like fabric and cloth, which is fondant and gumpaste…they just happen to be edible.” While people don’t typically purchase cake out of necessity, they will likely purchase a custom-made, intricately designed cake out of WANELO. “Let’s face it, no one needs a cake, nor do they need a high-end or couture article of clothing,” says Goard, whose replica of a designer handbag is featured on the cover. “I think custom cakes and fashion are luxuries that make you feel special.” Goard often gets requests to do a cake for someone who “loves to shop,” so she charges herself with creating in cake the shoe or Average consumers can live vicariously through a designer handbag...in cake.
