focus," said Mr. Hobbs. "And we feel
confident in Rowdy to do that.
"Rowdy is extremely forward thinking. He's always looking for the newest
technology and applications for that
technology within the industry," he
continued. "He thinks more of how
the bakeries are integrated rather than
separated and sees the value of one
program across the whole network. He
thinks in big picture terms."
According to Mr. Hobbs, Mr.
Brixey has a good business sense, an
interest in every part of the business
and a good understanding of what
IBC is trying to accomplish as an
organization. Beyond understanding, he is also good at identifying
and integrating applications to help
move IBC in its new direction. "He
has a very good grasp of cost structure and what drives cost in and out
of it," said Mr. Hobbs.
For his first project as director of
engineering, Mr. Brixey is establishing a formal set of standards that
apply to how IBC purchases equipment. "In the past, each division
engineer had his own set of procedures. In my new role, I'm responsible for establishing and applying a
single set of standards based on best
practices of all our baking plants,"
he said. "It's a big task." When he
is done, the standards will afford
IBC and its equipment
suppliers a consistent
set of procedures,
A Fathers Pride
Junior Brixey, Rowdy's father, began his bakery career
in 1959 with American Bakeries, which later became
IBC. He now works as a project engineer under Brian
Poulter, senior vice-president, project engineering,
and spends a majority of his time on the road. His career and dedication to the industry had a tremendous
influence on his son.
Junior Brixey is most proud of his son for having
started out as an oiler and a helper to work his way
up to the top. "Rowdy knows every step of the process
and the whole operation very well," he said.
Mr. Brixey has always supported his son's career but
admits he was worried when he set his goals so high and
took such big leaps."I was scared when Rowdy left to go
to Birmingham to be an assistant. I thought he was too
young," said Junior Brixey."He asked me what he should
do, but I wouldn't tell him because I would have been
speaking from my heart and not my head. I always knew

specifications and practices. "They
will simplify and standardize the
purchasing process no matter where
they are applied within our manufacturing facilities," he noted.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE. No great
leader reaches his goal without adversity. Mr. Brixey said that his biggest
challenge throughout his career has
been managing people older than
himself. "For years, I was younger than
most people in the groups I managed.
I found the best way to overcome this
was by earning their respect."
Early on in his career as assistant
chief engineer at Birmingham, a respected mechanic at the plant asked
him, "Son, have you ever tried to
push cattle into a barn?" That simple
question proved to be a turning point
for Mr. Brixey and still influences his
management style today. "I thought
about his question for a while, and I
he had potential; I just didn't want to see him get hurt."
The main thing Mr. Brixey taught his son was to
learn as much he could in every situation. "I always
told him to learn it. Even if you never do it again, it
won't hurt to know how," he stated. He also taught
Rowdy to be himself and remember where he comes
from. These lessons contributed to his son's humble
nature and fair leadership style. "He's not better than
anyone else - he's just Rowdy," said Junior Brixey.
"He's a good leader because he leads by example. He
wouldn't dream of asking someone to do something
that he wouldn't or hasn't done."
The father-son team had the opportunity over the
years to join forces on a number of big projects in
Alexandria, LA; Memphis, TN; and Lenexa, KS. "Words
can't express how much it meant to both of us to
work together on these big projects. It was a lot of
fun," Junior Brixey said.
Mr. Brixey's fatherly pride in his son and his accomplishments is apparent and well deserved. "It makes
me feel good as a dad that a lot of the things I taught
him, he can outdo me now. That really tickles me," he
said. "You always want your kids to be better and do
more than you - and Rowdy has."
It is easy to see why Rowdy has been inspired and
motivated by his father throughout his career. Although
the 62-year-old could retire at any time, he has no plans
to do so and said he doesn't know what he'd do during
his days - without the bakery, he'd be bored."Bakery life
has been very good to me for 40 some years, and I think
Rowdy is going to be very, very good for the baking
industry for years to come," Junior Brixey said.
