pita omelet was designed to be held by smaller hands and
consumed on the run or in the case of younger consumers, consumed while running.
In the third quarter, Van's will launch a frozen waffle
stuffed sandwich. The company's decision to produce a
waffle sandwich was based on research that found consumers are not necessarily looking for new waffle flavors,
but instead they would like to incorporate a protein element with a waffle. Additional information consistently
shows consumers are more apt to prepare a variety of
breakfast elements such as pancakes, bacon and eggs
on the weekend, rather than during the busier Monday
to Friday schedule. The waffle sandwich, like the pita
omelet or egg, cheese and meat toaster pastry, allows the
opportunity for a weekend indulgence of multiple breakfast elements during the workweek.
Fast-food restaurants have long known the appeal of
meat and carbohydrate combinations, including chicken.
The use of chicken as a breakfast component is a staple
found in fast-food restaurants such as Chick-Fil-A. Consumers also enjoy the combination of chicken and waffles. The popularity of chicken for breakfast will continue

to gain appeal now that McDonald's has introduced its
own Southern-style chicken biscuit. While maybe not yet
a concern to these markets, restaurant trends eventually
filter down to mainstream popularity.
"I see no shift away from convenient food because
there is too much going on for people," Mr. Orris said. "It
just takes awhile for consumers to process and internalize
processed foods with a certain set of ingredients and the
benefits of the combination of ingredients such as proteins and carbohydrates."
TEACH THEM YOUNG. To manufacturers' benefit, the
once-dismissed morning meal continues to gain popularity. School curriculum teaches students the importance of beginning the day with breakfast, and studies
consistently show that children who eat breakfast score
better on tests and do better overall throughout the
school day. Manufacturers who echo ideas promoting
the importance of breakfast have an opportunity to win
over young consumers early with great-tasting, convenient and healthy products that make meal preparation
for mom and dad easier and provide a smoother start to
the day for all concerned.
