Ace Bakery packaging destined for US and Canadian
markets features the WGC
stamp. Chosen because "It's
the most universally recognized whole-grain standard in the US," according to
Philip Shaw, c.e.o., Ace Bakery. Its use required negotiation between WGC and CFIA.
According to the agreement,
the WGC stamp for Canadian
use cannot list the number of
grams of whole grains, which
is prominently displayed in the
US market. CFIA approved the
WGC stamp in March.
"There's a need for representation that's objective and separate from
the manufacturer who is generating the claims," Mr. Shaw
said. "Without third-party objectivity, a company or product
can fall prey to greenwashing or misleading the consumer."
FOLLOW THROUGH. Whether reading a nutritional
label, checking out a company Web site or researching
the latest health claim heard on the news, consumers seek
information to make quality decisions for themselves and
their families. Claims can be the perfect addition to the
taste/cost equation, providing an additional value-added
component for consumers.
Choose a claim certified through a third-party organization or call out better-for-you ingredients, but reinforce
these messages through consistent consumer education
to substantiate claims and provide an outlet for educated
and concerned consumers.
"I believe there is a hunger for food to satiate the
stomach and also a hunger to satiate the mind with information about the food you are eating," Mr. Shaw said. Ⅲ
