While they are being integrated over the next 12 months, both companies will continue to offer individual service to their customers. The Moorseville, NC, quality assurance team of Bay State Milling Co., Quincy, MA, received the AACC International Analytical Accuracy Award for 2010, Series A, Hard Wheat Flour, Monthly. Kraft to reduce workforce as part of realignment
Kraft Foods, Inc., Northfield, IL, plans to realign its US sales organization, consolidate US management centers and streamline corporate and business unit organization in preparation for its split into a global snacks company and a separate grocery business. “When we announced our decision to create two world-class companies last August, we said both would be leaner, more competitive organizations,” said Irene Rosenfeld, chairman and CEO. “For the past year, the North American team has been working to streamline operations to deliver sustainable top-tier performance and continue to invest in our iconic brands. We’re confident that this transformational work will improve effectiveness and fuel the future growth of both companies.” As part of the realignment of US sales, Kraft said it plans to create more focused teams, allowing each company to customize its approach to in-store sales and execution to maximize impact. These plans will eliminate about 1,600 jobs in North America. Kraft said approximately 40% of the job cuts are due to the US sales realignment, with the rest the result of consolidating US management centers and streamlining the corporate and business unit organizations. The snacks business will leverage a directstore delivery model, with most US retail sales employees shifting to the North American region of the global snacks company, Kraft said, while the grocery company will reorganize within the US. Local retail support will be contracted to two sales agencies, with Kraft oversight and direction. Kraft anticipates having both US sales organizations in place by April 1. The future global snacks company will have its headquarters in the Chicago area, with the choice of site currently under consideration. The North American region for the global snacks company will be based at the East Hanover campus. Elaborating on the planned reduction of the 1,600 jobs, Kraft cited its efforts throughout 2011 to lower costs to provide funds to invest in its brands. GMA director to lead new food safety alliance
Glenn Black, director of science operations and food production for the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), was named chair of the newly formed Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) Steering and Executive Committee. “GMA has always been a leader in food safety education and training, and our involvement in this area continues to grow as the food industry evolves into a manufacturing base with more local and international production facilities and global ingredient sourcing,” said Leon Bruner, chief science officer for GMA. 20 / Baking & Snack / February 2012 “We’re honored to be chairing the alliance and hope that our extensive experience in food safety will help the alliance in its mission to train and educate a broad array of stakeholders on compliance with the new Food Safety Modernization Act preventive controls requirements.” Developed in December by the Food and Drug Administration in cooperation with the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute for Food Safety and Health, FSPCA will develop training courses and materials about preventing contamination of human and animal food during production.
