Heeth Varnedoe III, retired
Flowers executive, dies

Heeth Varnedoe III, who retired in 1997
as president and chief operating officer of
Flowers Foods Inc., died March 27 at the age
of 84.
A native of Thomasville, Ga., and grandson of Flowers Foods' founder William H.
Flowers, Mr. Varnedoe worked at the company during summers in high school and
Varnedoe
college, first sweeping floors and changing oil in delivery trucks
and then running bread routes. He joined the bakery's sales
team as a route salesman after graduating from the University
of Georgia. Over the course of his career, Mr. Varnedoe was
manager of the company's Thomasville baking plant, president
of Flowers' bakery division and executive vice president of operations. In 1980, he was elected to Flowers' board of directors.
He was named president and COO in 1986, a position he held
until his retirement.
Active in industry affairs, Mr. Varnedoe was a past chairman of the American Bakers Association and served on the
boards of the American Institute of Baking, the Quality Bakers
of America and Southern Bakers. He was a committee member
of the International Baking Industry Exposition.

General Mills to cut back on
contract manufacturing

General Mills Inc. plans to cut back manufacturing once pandemic-fueled demand for its food and beverage products levels off,
said Kofi Bruce, chief financial officer. In an interview with The
Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Mr. Bruce said the Minneapolis-based
maker of Cheerios and Betty Crocker products enlisted approximately 200 contract manufacturers prior to the coronavirus
(COVID-19) stay-at-home orders in March 2020. As demand for
its products ramped up, the company signed an additional 50 new
contract manufacturers, he said.
The plan, Mr. Bruce told the  WSJ, is for General Mills to reduce contract manufacturing as quickly as possible as the process
costs more and cuts into a product's gross margin. He also told
the WSJ that General Mills has its eye on other costs, such as rising commodity prices.

W. Galen Weston, retail and Crown Bakeries unveils
food business titan, dies
flurry of personnel changes
W. Galen Weston, longtime executive
of George Weston Ltd., Toronto, died April
12 after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Born in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK,
on Oct. 29, 1940, the youngest of nine children, W. Galen Weston studied business administration at Huron University College at
the University of Western Ontario. In 1961
Weston
he began his career by acquiring and expanding supermarkets and
department stores in Ireland. In 1972 he returned to Canada to
take charge of Loblaw, a struggling chain of grocery stores that
George Weston Ltd. had controlled since 1947.
Mr. Weston maintained executive control of George Weston
Ltd. from 1974 (when he succeeded his father, W. Garfield
Weston), until 2016 when he stepped down as executive chairman
and handed the reins to his son, Galen G. Weston. During his
four decades of leadership, Mr. Weston oversaw the introduction
of many brands and retail concepts and Weston grew into one of
North America's largest food processing companies.

Crown Bakeries has announced numerous new hires
and promotions.
Kandy L. Grenier has been named vice president of human
resources. Troy Schmidli has joined the company as director of
HR operations. Matt Boxrucker has been named director of operations. Chance Delany has joined the company as director of
strategic analysis. Seth Hampton has been promoted to corporate director of engineering. Larry Murray has been promoted to
regional operations director for Georgia. Ralph Smink has been
promoted to plant manager in Norcross. Karl Diver has joined the
company as plant manager for the Smyrna, Ga., facility. T.J. Evert
has joined Crown Bakeries as engineering manager at the Music
City facility. Elvia Guzman has been named production manager
at the Smyrna plant. Michael Buroker has joined the company as
production supervisor at the company's Music City plant. Mike
Krubeck has been named production manager at the company's
Smyrna facility. Matthew Lee Vander Lyke has been named engineering manager at the company's Smyrna facility.
